With a talented and diverse team spread around the globe, HOT is an NGO which supports a dynamic global community of thousands of dedicated volunteers using maps and open data for humanitarian response and the Sustainable Development Goals. Working with humanitarian and development partners like the Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières, UN agencies, governments and others, the HOT community maps in solidarity with those affected by or at risk of disaster, contributing the maps and data aid workers need to do their lifesaving work. In 2020 the work of the HOT community was recognized by TED’s Audacious Project, a collaborative philanthropic initiative that serves as a springboard for social impact on a grand scale, leading to an exciting new phase of growth. HOT is expanding its activities: opening four regional hubs and scaling up its support to local mapping communities with the audacious goal of mapping an area home to one billion people in 94 countries at high risk of disasters or experiencing poverty - mapping with communities before they are in crisis. About You You have three or more years working in a communications role in a humanitarian or development organization. You should thrive in a fast paced, startup-like environment with a highly motivated and unconventional team. You can choose your own office location and should love working with remote teams as you’ll spend significant time on Slack and Zoom. About the Role This is a temporary position to cover parental leave. The Communications Associate will work closely with HOT’s Senior Communications Manager in the global External Relations team to support and execute HOT’s external communications and raise the profile of HOT among our audiences. This role will involve supporting HOT communications across all channels and supporting HOT’s participation in external events Responsibilities Manage HOT’s social media activities, including posting to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other platforms and monitoring community accounts for promotable content Monitor and analyze social media and website performance Edit and publish news posts, including posts by authors who are non-native English speakers, and a monthly newsletter Support events & conferences, including writing/editing proposals, coordination of participant materials, liaising with organizers, and support participation as needed Assist with the development of marketing/communications materials and other information resources Qualifications Essential 3+ years in similar communications, social media or public relations role with desire to use digital skills for development/humanitarian relief and improving the lives of others Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Marketing, or Communications, Emergency/Disaster Management, International Affairs, Public or Business Administration, Nonprofit Management or similar Fluency in English, with clear, concise, and compelling writing skills Editing experience Experience supporting events Ability to use graphic design tools (such as Canva, Adobe suite, basic photo editing) Excellent organization skills, ability to prioritize and attentive to detail Desirable Previous journalism experience Experience with third-party social media management tools such as Hootsuite or AgoraPulse Experience with photo and video editing Prior experience in nonprofits, development, or humanitarian aid Are you missing a few of the technical skills listed?
