Job Brief:

International Justice Mission (IJM) is seeking a talented, passionate, professional, who is highly motivated to use their communications skills and experience to develop and distribute compelling story content and key messages that amplify the voices of survivors of violence against women and children, to impactfully call for action to end violence. The Coordinator, Communications and Media will lead the IJM Uganda team to develop and implement an innovative program communications strategy as an integral part of a global and regional activation strategy and national advocacy plan that rallies actors within the formal justice system, traditional and religious structures to action in the protection of women and children in Uganda. The Coodinator, Communications and Media works closely with all regional offices and function managers; the position is based in Kampala and reports to the Country Director.

Key Result Areas:

The success of this role is measured by the following KRAs:

  1. Under the guidance of the Country Director, regional and global communications, lead in the design, planning and implementation of the IJM Uganda VAWC Program - Communications Strategy and Media Engagement Plan;

  2. Identify and develop compelling storytelling materials for local and international audiences;

  3. Manage media relations, including generating press coverage for national and local IJM and partner cases; and develop a network of communication and media professionals that use their influence and voice to highlight the situation of violence against women and children in Uganda.

  4. In close collaboration with the national leadership, regional and global communications team, develop a social media strategy that generates impactful and compelling awareness raising content on intimate partner violence and sexual violence against children. Run social media for IJM Uganda platforms ensuring innovative content, consistent messaging and branding, optimal posting schedule, and constituency engagement metrics.

  5. Ensure IJM Uganda’s compliance with global standards and polices for communications and branding;

Roles and Responsibilities:

Strategic Development & Implementation

  1. Design, plan and lead the implementation of the IJM Uganda VAWC Program - Communications Strategy and Media Engagement Plan

  2. Participate in all ongoing program design, redesign, and analysis efforts, identifying communications and media strategies to strengthen the overall impact of the program.

  3. Develop media and communication plans for key advocacy cases and ensure the cases are covered by media in court;

  4. Track the Communications and Media Engagement Plan, adapting to emerging trends that impact the program theory of change and overall program activities;

  5. Work with program leads, partners and other stakeholders to develop client and survivor stories to be used for awareness creation, behaviour change and social demand for an end to violence against women and children;

  6. Manage all social media platforms for IJM Uganda ensuring innovative content, consistent messaging and branding, optimal posting schedule, and constituency engagement metrics.

  7. Manage all communications and media required for grant-specific projects in line with donor requirements.

Networking & Partnership:

  1. Establish, maintain and strengthen strategic relationships with external stakeholders, local and international media representatives and journalists to drive positive media coverage through proactive and innovative approaches including press releases and creative media events;

  2. Prepare media briefs, develop external communication to media to sustain positive media engagement while sharing critical news pieces within the organization on timely basis;

  3. Ensure the successful tracking of media mentions for the IJM Uganda program and key partners, and other significant events relating to protection of women and children, as well as analyzing trends and impact;

  4. Develop and sustain a media (mainstream and social media) information – education campaign on intimate partner violence and sexual violence against children;

  5. Update media contact list/database for both local and international media;

  6. Work with IJM regional office and global team to plan and execute storytelling projects for use by advancement team.

  7. Ensure that media messages and media interactions are conducted in line with the highest professional standards and comply with existing laws, professional ethics and IJM’s policies and procedures.**

  8. Build a civil society network of communications and media personnel for joint messaging and ensure consistency and reinforcement of partner messages on VAWC;**

  9. Identify quality vendors and contractors to provide printing, photography, graphic design and video support as needed for national projects.

Policies and Procedures

  1. Prepare and keep updated a Communications Memo for IJM Uganda and IJM Global on the Communications Strategy for the Uganda Justice System Strengthening program.


  1. Under the guidance of the Country Director, manage IJM Uganda internal and external communications.

  2. Contextualize messaging for target audiences; from professional networks, government officials, religious and cultural and traditional leaders, survivors and mass media consumption to increase public awareness of violence against women and children.

  3. Prepare and develop communication materials to support media, policymakers, and constituency (religious, cultural, traditional and survivor groups) engagement, including key messaging briefs, newsletters and publications;

  4. Lead video and photo documentation of IJM Uganda office activities and manage the communication’s clients and staff photo and video database;

  5. Develop stories to activate IJM’s audiences locally and globally (creating content, proactively and reactively pitching ideas, fact checking);

  6. Inform IJM Uganda national leadership of communication risks, and take a lead role in local crisis communications, including drafting messaging and keeping the global communications team informed of developments.

  7. Design, translate and edit materials for training, education, and awareness raising including powerpoints and publications;

Training and Development:

  1. Identify, develop and train a network of communication and media professionals that are trauma-informed and use their influence and voice to highlight the situation of violence against women and children in Uganda;
  2. Organize journalists and media cluster meetings regularly and provide all year-round media coverage of activities organized by IJM and partners to ensure a strong coalition of the media and partners;

Documentation, Reporting & Data Management

  1. Documentation of the success of the Field Office work including case studies, success stories and best practices and collaborate with program leads and supporting them to develop strategies for when and what to publish;
  2. Generate a monthly national media reporting trends on VAWC and analyse emerging themes and trends to inform program strategy and response.

  3. Support program teams in review of appropriate and relevant IEC materials for use by the national office and work with outcome leads to develop position papers, policy briefs, presentations and materials for presentation in international, regional and national conferences e.g. compendiums, best practices documents, research fact sheets & briefs.

General tasks:

  1. Assist in hosting regional and international visitors to the field.


  1. The Coordinator, Communications and Media reports to the Country Director

  2. This position has no supervisory authority. However, will from time to time oversee the work of communications contractors and interns.

Education & Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in media, journalism, communications, broadcasting or related field.

  2. At least four years’ relevant experience in media broadcasting, public relations or communications (experience working in media reporting within the justice sector preferred);

  3. Strong experience in development, analysis and implementation of communication and media strategies, and tracking of media trends;

  4. Demonstrated active involvement in social media channels (including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Blogging and SnapChat) with verifiable digital presence;

  5. Experience developing and managing social media publishing and monitoring software;

  6. Proficient in group facilitation, with demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with partners, staff and colleagues with a high level of tact, diplomacy and confidentiality;

  7. Demonstrated ability to respond effectively and with an appropriate degree of urgency to the needs of a dynamic team, internally and externally;

  8. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and a local language;

  9. Valid driving license; and

  10. Computer literate - highly proficient in Microsoft Office programs and publishing software packages.

Technical Competencies:**

  1. Proven ability to present complex data and information in a clear and compelling manner to a wide range of stakeholders;

  2. Experience with Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) or similar program.

  3. Exceptional expertise in photography and videography;

  4. Fluency in English and at least one local language, with excellent writing and speaking in both.

  5. Computer literate with proficiency in MS Word, Outlook.

Non-Technical Competencies:
