Job Introduction

BBC Afrique is part of the British Broadcasting Corporation, the world’s largest public broadcaster. In Africa, the BBC reaches a weekly audience of more than 90 million people on Radio, TV, Digital, Mobile and Social Media.

BBC Afrique produces a wide range of radio and digital content with an emphasis on regional and international current affairs. We help our audience better understand their world so they can take control of their future and live to the fullest.

Main Responsibilities

We are seeking a passionate and creative digital journalist to help lead our editorial output from Dakar. You will drive the growth of our digital audience through effective commissioning and creation of high-quality content across multiple platforms. Your primary area of responsibility will be managing the BBC Afrique web site. You will be skilled at spotting and developing unique story ideas and optimizing content for maximum reach and impact. You will spot, report, write, adapt and edit stories for and about francophone Africa while adhering to BBC editorial policy through rigorous fact-checking and content subbing.

Are you the right candidate?

The ideal candidate will be fluent in French as first or equivalent language with a good knowledge of English, including complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively and translate material from English to French and vice versa. You will have significant recent experience as a digital journalist at a senior level in news, both in originating ideas and creating high-performing material, and in commissioning and editing the work of others. Knowledge of content management systems, SEO and audience analytics and engagement, as well as how to boost audience growth through our story choice and storytelling is also essential.
