Main responsibilities

Under the supervision of RET’s Director of Communications & External Relations, the Communications Officer is responsible for:

Content Generation, Materials Production & Archiving:

  • Draft clear and well-targeted texts and articles ( including technical pieces) for RET institutional channels and expand the content into various Print and/or digital multimedia formats (booklets, presentations, videos, infographics, articles…) in line with RET’s institutional identity and core messages;
  • Develop internal and external content and visibility materials as needed in line with RET’s Visual & Institutional Identity and transforming communications objectives into clear, defined, aesthetic formats (e.g., publications, presentations, campaigns and events, videos, digital stories, youth online networks, etc.)
  • Help create content on RET’s activities and achievements in all countries for use on RET’s global media platforms (website, social media, newsletters, global brochures, etc.);
  • Produce videos of RET projects, outcomes and impact, including interviewing beneficiaries, partners and staff for success stories and testimonies.
  • Gain a deep understanding of RET’s global mission and communications procedures & tools and organize training with staff members on RET’s mandate, RET’s Communication Toolkit, RET’s Institutional Identity, RET’s Security and Consent procedures, safe use of personal social media, etc.
  • Assist the Director of External Relations in his/her communications to the staff (internal communications) and produce the communications tools needed in their daily work (service cards, business cards, outreach material, etc.);
  • Guarantee that the country staff is aware of (and uses) RET’s main communications tools, identity, taglines, and global mission;
  • Ensure the country staff understand issues of security and consent when taking pictures/videos or posting on personal social media and verify that RET’s official communications procedures are followed;
  • Maintain, and archive a well-organized and safe Communications portfolio of RET’s presence in all countries on the organization Intranet/SharePoint.

Community Management (Social Media)

  • Serve as community focal point for any of our country, regional or global social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, blogs), producing and curating content that reflects communications priorities and key messages and speaks effectively to the appropriate audience.
  • Develop high-impact social media content, including graphics, videos, and other multimedia formats that effectively inform and engage external audiences and support institutional and project-based communications objectives
  • Produce social media content from the field, including photos and short videos that showcase RET’s operational work and the rights and needs of refugees and other people of concern, including coordinating with RET country staff to find the stories, facts, data, and testimonies needed to create content;
  • Ensure all content has gone through the proper internal validation channels before publication (security, consent, fact-check);
  • Plan and implement a social media content action plan with clear objectives to increase brand awareness and engagement with RET core target groups through social media channels’ effective use.
  • Monitor and moderate comments on social media posts, intervening as appropriate to answer questions and guide the conversation.
  • Use Google Analytics and other data sources to assess the impact and efficiency of social media activity.
  • Assist the Communications Director with the creation of reports to the broader RET’s management on Social Media success/reach.
  • Identify new platforms / research and opportunities to grow reach / opportunities to connect / convert core target audience.

Secondary Tasks

  • Develop a strong knowledge of the primary service providers of print and digital material in multiple regions of project implementation and create professional relationships with them.
  • Up-to-date in printing processes, color codes, and formats; know the printing materials and their properties, have an understanding of average prices to produce material that corresponds to the needs of the team;
  • Understand the media landscape of the region of implementation and develop a contact list of the main journalists RET may need to interact with;
  • Complete any additional task, as requested by the Director of Communications and External Relations.

Technical Core Competencies

  • Strong understanding and practical knowledge of (1) Social Media Content Management and (2) Website Content Management Systems (CMS);
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills both in English and French; any additional language such as German, Spanish, Turkish, Arabic would be considered an asset;
  • Design Skills, Video Editing Skills, Photography Skills: Proficiency with design and video software Adobe Creative Could (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Final Cut);
  • Excellent word processing and IT skills, including knowledge of a range of software packages and comprehensive capabilities in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Sharepoint);
  • 3) Proven knowledge in photography & Videography (capturing images as well as editing), experience with video and audio capture considered an asset;

Competencies Required

  • Bachelor’s in communications, Design Arts, Political Science or other related fields;
  • No less than 3 years’ experience working in communication, preferably at an NGO (or any other position requiring regular content creation.);
  • A strong sense of aesthetics and design, including technical competencies to use Design and Editing programs.
  • A capacity and natural inclination to closely follow security and consent verifications, internal procedures, and rules;
  • An ability to think strategically and view communications as a tool to reach the objectives of the organization;
