1. Background

The Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK) is a national faith-based organization of the Protestant Churches health facilities and programmes in Kenya, committed to promoting universal access to quality health care, with a secretariat based in Nairobi. CHAK technical support for member Church health facilities with a core mandate in advocacy, lobbying, representation, health systems strengthening, programmes development, resource mobilization and capacity building. Operationally, CHAK Secretariat plays a facilitative role by providing technical support, capacity building, coordination, advocacy and networking for its members. The Member Health Units core function remains health service delivery. **

CHAK has developed notable competencies in advocacy, health systems strengthening including medical equipment maintenance services, architectural services for infrastructure design and development, HMIS software, governance, capacity building, communication and networking. The CHAK Secretariat is located on Musa Gitau Road, off Waiyaki Way, in Nairobi. The premises also include the CHAK Guest House & Conference Centre. **

CHAK was established in 1946 and is celebrating its 75th anniversary. As part of the celebration, CHAK wishes to produce a documentary to educate stakeholders on its work. The documentary will highlight CHAK’s contribution to the health sector through its various programmes. To this end, CHAK invites qualified vendors to apply for the documentary production.

2. Overall objective of the Assignment

The overall objective of the assignment is to produce a documentary film highlighting CHAK’s work including best practices, achievements and impact in the programme focal areas.

3. Specific tasks for the Service Provider

Under the direct supervision of CHAK documentary development taskforce, the documentary filmmaker will:

i. Develop a documentary film for the celebration of CHAK’s 75th Anniversary with different stand-alone sections with for the various CHAK programmatic areas of about 4mins each and a combined documentary with highlights from the various sections and with a run through narration of about 15mins.

ii. Develop story boards and scripts for each of the sections in the documentary including narration

iii. Interview selected participants for the film who will include CHAK staff and project beneficiaries

iv. Perform appropriate video filming and shoot interviews with the projects’ beneficiaries and stakeholders.

v. Provide own equipment for the camera, sound and lighting functions

vi. Visit selected project sites in (Kilifi, Isiolo, West Pokot, Turkana, Bungoma, Homabay, Bomet, Kisii, Kitui, Tharaka-Nithi, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nairobi) and interact with the healthcare workers, health facility administration and beneficiaries for filming. Travel and accommodation will be facilitated by CHAK as per CHAK guidelines and in CHAK approved hotels.

vii. Present a draft documentary and perform editing until documentary is approved

viii. Present documentary film in broadcast quality, web quality and social media quality

ix. Present a final combined documentary of 15 minutes highlighting the various CHAK programmes, as well as the individual programme sections of approximately 5 minutes each.

The draft documentary sections are described in Annex 1.

4. Qualifications

i. Minimum of three (3) years’ documented work experience in the area of documentary writing, producing, directing, filming and editing **

ii. Access to highest quality filming, light, sound and editing equipment**

iii. Ability to operate under strict time limits and apply high production and technical standards for the purpose of maintaining high level of professionalism; **

iv. Ability to communicate and conduct interviews in English and Kiswahili**

v. Track record of successful materials filmed in the region and/or on similar topics would be an asset. **

5. Deliverables and Timelines

· Pre-production including:

· Entry meetings with CHAK

· Treatment

· Shots list

· Story board

· Scripting

· All other steps that must be completed in the pre-production stage

Expected duration: 4 weeks

i. Production:

· Actual shooting to include lighting, sound, filming, logging shots etc

Expected duration: 4 weeks

ii. Post production to include:

· Editing

· Licensed music and effects

· Voice over

· Feedback and revisions (3 cuts)

· Sign off

· Delivery

· Provide CHAK with the raw footage in a format that can be used later

Expected duration: 3 weeks

iii. Publishing:

· CHAK will advise on hosting and distribution channels. The video will be available on CHAK social media channels and Website.

· Production firm will provide links to the content in an easily available and downloadable format for both mobile devises and PCs

· Delivery also on formats and quantities to be discussed during pre-production meetings.

Expected duration: 2 weeks

iv. Intellectual Property

All information (documentary, audio, digital, cyber, project documents, etc) which the documentary filmmaker may come into contact as they perform their duties under this consultancy shall remain the property of CHAK who shall have exclusive rights over their use. Except for purposes of this assignment, the information shall not be disclosed to the public nor used in whatever form without written permission from CHAK.
