Context

BBC Media Action is the BBC's international charity that uses media and communications to tackle poverty and contribute to long-term change in developing countries. To achieve this, we partner with civil society, local media and governments to:

  • Produce creative content in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues;
  • Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity through effective mentoring and training partnerships.

We do this through our focus on health, governance, resilience and humanitarian response. The BBC Media Action is primarily funded by external grants, including the UK's Department for International Development and other donors.

Job Purpose

We are searching for a highly motivated, imaginative, and experienced web designer to update two existing website and mirror the two existing WordPress websites (Gender and Media, Lifeline Programming) to Arabic and French. The websites built on WordPress using WordPress themes and plugins. Reporting to Senior Digital Product Designer, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality and responsive and user-friendly websites according to a finalised brief, translated content and visual assets provided.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • You will have at least 3-5 years experience in web design
  • Expert knowledge in website theme customisation and web development using WordPress
  • Expert knowledge in HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript and creating interactive quizzes
  • Expert knowledge in working on multi-language website projects, including Arabic and French.
  • Understanding of industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and InVision
  • Experience of designing within branding guidelines and technical specs
  • Experience of using visual builders and visual text editors on WordPress
  • Experience of setting up search engine optimisation using in-built plugins on WordPress
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work to deadlines
  • Ideally, you will possess other media design and development skills, such as graphic design, video editing and media production
  • A portfolio demonstrating your experience

Responsibilities

  • Liaise with relevant project teams and team members to understand users' needs and identify corresponding user interface requirements, workflows, and functionalities
  • Designing two websites in 'Gender and Media' and 'Lifeline Programming' subjects in French and Arabic languages according to provided brand guideline and brief and content
  • Updating content and improving UI on existing two websites (Gender and Media and Lifeline Programming)
  • Making UI improvements on existing English sites
  • Working closely with translators and Project team to be sure that websites are translated and implemented correctly in French and Arabic language context
  • Editing & embedding videos and images where necessary
  • Testing the websites in multi-devices and run usability testing to be sure that the websites are working responsively
  • Maintain brand consistency throughout all website production
  • Working closely with Senior Digital Product Designer to ensure deadlines and project expectations met
  • Ensure design consistency across all assets

Desirable:

  • Fluent in English, Arabic and French.
