Terre des Hommes Netherlands is looking for a consultant to develop and produce several communication materials for the region East Africa, in content and in form.

Background

Terre des Hommes Netherlands (TdH-NL) is a child rights organisation committed to stopping child exploitation. Anchoring its programmes on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), TdH-NL works within four child protection themes: 1. child trafficking and unsafe migration; 2. child sexual exploitation; 3. the worst forms of child labour; and 4. child abuse including violations of Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights and harmful traditional practices such as child marriage and Female Genital Mutilation.

TdH-NL fights child exploitation through quality programmes, capacity building of local civil society organisations, promotion of child rights and lobby for better compliance with the UNCRC and other internal and local instruments. Its humanitarian assistance work is mainly integrated into the other four themes.

In all its programmes, a sustainable and holistic approach is deployed to address child exploitation through the five Ps of Prevention, Provision, Promotion, Prosecution, Partnership & Participation, focusing not only on children and their direct environment (families/communities) but also involving stakeholders that are key to achieve sustainable change (government, law enforcement, private sector, civil society organisations). TdH-NL’s preferred programme implementation model is in partnership with local civil society organisations, who are strengthened with expertise and knowledge through technical and financial support as well as capacity building.

Geographically, TdH-NL’s work is concentrated in Europe, Asia and Africa. In East Africa, the organisation operates in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda; with preparations ongoing to start in Madagascar in the short term.

Mission: Terre des Hommes Netherlands prevents child exploitation, removes children from exploitative situations and ensures these children can develop themselves in a safe environment.

Objectives

Terre des Hommes Netherlands is looking for a consultant to develop and produce several communication materials for the region East Africa, in content and in form. These materials are needed to improve the organisation’s visibility and profile, in line with the global and regional strategic objectives of the organisation, in particular to grow sustainable impact (i.e. in support of TdH-NL’s resource mobilisation efforts) and to claim its role as recognised expert organisation. Main target audiences are key agencies in Child Protection and key agencies with supplementing ‘technical’ services and/or expertise, as well as funding institutions, for partnering and funding; media in East Africa to voice TdH-NL’s expertise and demonstrate its work and impact; local, regional and national governments as well as treaty bodies like the AU, EAC; and the general public in all its countries of operation.

Scope of work

Under guidance of the Senior Communication Officer at the Regional Office East Africa, the consultant should develop various materials for external communication, in content and in form; followed by production of (a selection of these) materials in hard copy. Information for content is available but scattered and should be compiled into materials that are compact and to the point, as well as very attractive and appealing. Preference is to make use of highly visual / visualised materials (e.g. through infographics) without compromising on the width and depth of the content and in consistency with TdH-NL’s brand guidelines.

Materials to be developed:

• Annual report 2018-2019 for the region East Africa; a condensed, short & sweet report focusing on highlights and top-level achievements and financial information (detailed audited accounts are included in the global annual report for the whole organisation)

• Draft annual report 2020 for the region East Africa; in the same style (near-ready, for finalisation in the course of 2021)

• Country profiles for each country, including development of a template

• Design of capacity statements for each country (content has already been populated), including development of a template

Timeline

This consultancy is expected to span approximately 20-30 full-time days, which should be spread over a longer period of time to allow for review and feedback. Ideally the consultant will start on Monday 16 November 2020, and submit all deliverables by Friday 18 December 2020.

Qualifications

TdH-NL is looking for a content developer with sound programmatic insight and excellent editing and design skills, both in writing and in visualising:

• Demonstrated experience in developing and producing accessible and attractive communication and in editing, both in text (narrative) and visually (graphic design and infographics).

• Demonstrated experience in international development and children’s rights, preferably with experience in working on child exploitation issues.

• High level of English is essential.

• Knowledge of / insight in terminology guidelines for the protection of children is an asset.

• Ability to synthesise complex / layered information into key messages.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and flexible attitude.

Proprietary rights

Outputs delivered under this consultancy contract will remain the property of TdH- NL as per

TdH-NL’s General Conditions of Contract for Consultants and Individual Contractors. This includes raw files, editable files and all copies. The consultant commits to send these to TdH-NL. TdH-NL will be the owner of all editable files.

• Consultant’s portfolio: evidence of past work relevant to this consultancy, including infographics

• Three references of recent, similar assignments
