Established in 2005, Fairtrade Africa is the independent non-profit umbrella organization representing all Fairtrade certified producers in Africa. Fairtrade Africa is owned by its members, who are African producer organizations certified against international Fairtrade standards producing traditional export commodities such as coffee, cocoa, tea, cotton, bananas, mango, and non- traditional commodities including shea butter and rooibos tea. Currently, the organization represents over 1.18 million smallholder farmers and workers across 28 countries in Africa.


To mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Fairtrade producers’ health, well-being and economic sustainability, this project on RECOVER AFRICA: COVID-19 Fair Trade Emergency Initiative, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is implemented by Fairtrade Africa from October 2020 to April 2022. The project aims to provide immediate relief to and support prevention of the further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic on at-risk producers in nine countries in Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Madagascar, Malawi and South Africa); as well as help producers recover from economic losses due to COVID-19, maintain and diversify their supply chain relations, and ensure business continuity, food security and income generation for their member -– thereby building producers’ resilience to future shocks and stresses.


FTA wishes to engage the services of a qualified individual(s), firm(s) or institution(s) to carry out the following tasks:

Produce a video documentary in the most powerful, effective and innovative ways to show the impact of RECOVER AFRICA project activities in the lives of producers in Kenya, Ghana and South Africa. These stories from the field will be uploaded in Fairtrade Africa’s website with links to appropriate social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and other similar platforms. **


1. Video Production

This will entail the production of a video documentary of the process of implementing RECOVER AFRICA project and its impact in the lives of Fairtrade producers, their families and communities in the country.

The video will be used to showcase and educate stakeholders on what Fairtrade Africa does use powerful storylines to inspire and engage audiences in the work and mission of Fairtrade, especially during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ultimate goal is to drive the desire among external stakeholders to want to be part of the Fairtrade story.

By showcasing the power of individual stories, the video will be a compelling documentary about the challenges, successes and resilience of farmers and producers and why people should engage in Fairtrade market during and after the pandemic.

The consultant will be expected to provide a detailed report on all filming locations, including names and contact details of all individuals that will appear on film. The report must also include at least 5 powerful statements by producers/community members and other stakeholders to be used in reports and factsheets.


FTA is looking for individual consultant(s), firm(s), or institution(s) with demonstrated experience in developing video documentaries with socially relevant contents such the COVID-19 pandemic, gender equality, women empowerment and youth engagement. In addition, the said should possess the following.

● An individual or agency with at least five (5) years expertise in producing quality video documentaries that deal with sustainable development subjects with a wide-reaching following and subscriptions;

Technical and Functional Competencies to include:

● Experiences of performing similar kind of task (list and background of Production team and agencies)

● Excellent writing and communication skills;

● Demonstrates openness to change and ability to receive/integrate feedback in the project management process;

● Good networking skills to engage with both technical and non-technical people.


The successful individual consultant(s), firm(s) or institution(s) is/are expected to carry out the assignment in 30 working days from the date of signing the contract.


No equipment will be purchased or provided by FTA. Any equipment needed to complete this assignment will be provided by the service provider
